PVD vs. Electroplating vs. Powder Coating: An Honest Comparison
Three processes, three philosophies
Most decorative metal finishing today happens one of three ways. Electroplating deposits a metal layer from a chemical bath using electrical current. Powder coating sprays charged polymer powder onto the part and bakes it into a continuous film. PVD vaporises metal in a vacuum and condenses it onto the surface as a thin ceramic-hard layer. Each has a legitimate place; the mistake is treating them as interchangeable.
Durability
Electroplated layers can be beautiful but are comparatively soft, and thin gold or brass plating wears through at touch points — anyone who has seen a plated handle go dull at the grip knows the pattern. Powder coating is tough against chipping but is a polymer: it can scratch, chalk under UV, and once breached it can lift. A PVD layer is harder than either and is bonded rather than applied, so there is no film to peel. For high-touch hardware, it is the most durable decorative option in common use.
Colour and consistency
Powder coating wins on colour range — if you need a specific RAL shade, polymer pigments will get you there. PVD's palette is the palette of metal compounds: golds, rose golds, bronzes, blacks, gunmetals, champagnes. Within that palette, though, PVD is unmatched on stability: the colour cannot fade because it is not a pigment, and batch-to-batch repeatability is excellent because it is set by process physics rather than by mixing.
Corrosion and the outdoors
Electroplating's bath chemistry can leave micro-pores that become corrosion sites, which is why plated exterior hardware often fails first at the coast. Powder coating protects well until the film is breached. PVD's dense layer over a suitable substrate — stainless steel especially — is the strongest performer for exterior and humid-environment metalwork.
Where PVD is not the answer
- Parts that cannot go into a vacuum chamber or tolerate process temperatures.
- Projects that need an exact painted colour rather than a metallic tone.
- Budget-driven applications where the part is short-lived and appearance longevity does not matter.
An honest supplier will tell you when a cheaper process serves the job. When the brief is a metal look that keeps its finish for years in real use, PVD is usually the answer — and it is the one we have built our work around.
